Google Analytics alternatives: 6 privacy-first tools compared

Plausible, Fathom, Simple Analytics, Umami, Matomo, and Embaze — what actually differs between them, and what to check before you switch.

We make one of the tools on this list, so read the bias in accordingly. But the honest answer to "which privacy-first analytics tool should I use" is that most of them solve the same core problem the same way — no persistent cookie, no ad-network data sharing, a simple dashboard instead of GA4's report-builder maze — and differ mostly in hosting model and dashboard depth, not in some secret privacy technique one of them has and the others don't.

What "privacy-first" means across all of them

Every tool in this category avoids the thing that actually triggers cookie-consent law: a persistent client-side identifier that can recognize the same visitor across sessions. Some hash a rotating daily fingerprint (that's Embaze's approach — see our post on how that works), others use different rotation schemes, but the shared design goal is the same: no ID that survives long enough to build a cross-session profile without consent. That's the real dividing line from Google Analytics, not any one vendor's marketing.

The tools themselves

  • Plausible — hosted SaaS, open-source, also self-hostable if you want to run it yourself. One of the most established names in this space, with a clean, simple dashboard.
  • Fathom — hosted SaaS only, not open-source, not self-hostable. Positions itself on simplicity and speed of setup.
  • Simple Analytics — hosted SaaS, publishes its own transparent data-handling practices in detail; a good one to read directly if data provenance is your main concern.
  • Umami — open-source and free to self-host, with a paid hosted option too if you don't want to run your own server. The most common pick for teams that want $0 cost and don't mind managing infrastructure.
  • Matomo — the oldest and most feature-heavy tool here, self-hostable for free or paid cloud-hosted, with far more reporting depth (heatmaps, session recording, funnels) than the others — closer to a full GA4 replacement, at the cost of more setup.
  • Embaze — hosted SaaS, built around a single fast dashboard rather than a wide feature surface; see our other posts for exactly how the tracking mechanism works.

What actually differs, in practice

Once you're past "do I need a cookie banner," the real differences are: self-hosted vs. hosted-only (Plausible, Umami, and Matomo let you run your own instance; Fathom, Simple Analytics, and Embaze are hosted-only), open-source vs. closed, and how much reporting depth you actually need. Matomo is the outlier with real depth — session recordings, heatmaps, funnels, goal tracking — which is also why it takes longer to set up and has more to learn. Everything else in this list is deliberately narrow: visitors, pageviews, referrers, top pages, devices, done.

What to check before you switch

  • Historical data doesn't transfer. None of these tools can import your GA4 history — cookie-free tracking measures differently from cookie-based tracking, so there's no clean migration path for past data. You start a fresh dataset the day you switch.
  • Confirm the consent-banner claim against your whole stack, not just the analytics tool. Swapping GA4 for a cookie-free tool only removes one trigger — ad pixels, embedded videos, chat widgets, and session-replay tools can each independently require their own consent (see our checklist post on this).
  • Check data export and portability before you commit, not after — you want a real way to get your own data out if you ever switch again.
  • If your team needs deep funnel/goal modeling or heatmaps, only Matomo in this list covers that natively — the others are intentionally simpler tools.

There isn't a universally "best" answer here — there's a best answer for what you're actually trying to measure. If that's "how much traffic am I getting, from where, on which pages," any tool on this list handles it well, and the deciding factor is usually hosting preference and dashboard taste more than anything else.
